Kathryn Kuhn Promoted to Vice President of Government and Community Affairs at the Medical College

The Medical College of Wisconsin announced the promotion of Kathryn Kuhn to vice president of government and community affairs. T. Michael Bolger, J.D., president and CEO, said that Kuhn would take on expanded responsibilities in community relations. Kuhn has directed the Medical College’s government affairs program since 2001and was appointed associate vice president of government affairs in 2007.

Thomas Brophy, director of community relations, will retire from the Medical College on June 30, 2010.

John R. Raymond, M.D., incoming president and CEO of the Medical College, endorsed Kuhn’s promotion. He said, “Kathryn Kuhn has been an effective advocate for The Medical College of Wisconsin at both the state and national levels. Her knowledge, experience and leadership in building community coalitions to effect change make her the ideal individual to oversee these important programs.”

Bolger said, “One of the four missions of The Medical College of Wisconsin is community engagement. It is a very important part of who we are and what we do. Kathryn Kuhn has the necessary experience and capabilities to expand the Medical College’s commitment to and collaborations with the communities we serve.”

A Green Bay native, Kuhn has articulated the Medical College’s positions on public policy issues in both Madison and Washington, D.C. She has provided counsel to the Medical College’s leadership on proposed and enacted laws, and on the evaluation and implementation of corporate organizational changes resulting from legislative action.

Kuhn successfully secured over $40 million in government funding to support new facilities and programs to advance the Medical College’s academic and research initiatives. She collaborated with leaders and faculty members from the Medical College, Marshfield Clinic, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, on securing state-support for the Wisconsin Genomics Initiative, a historic collaboration to advance personalized health care.

She also develops, presents and advocates for The Medical College of Wisconsin’s needed state support during deliberations on the State of Wisconsin’s biennial budget. Kuhn successfully negotiated the Medical College’s most recent long-term land lease contract with Milwaukee County, and serves as the Medical College’s spokesperson on the Zoo interchange modernization project.

Before joining the Medical College’s administration, Kuhn was deputy director of Milwaukee County’s Division of Intergovenmental Relations, and served as a legislative associate for the Wisconsin Counties Association.

She is a mayoral appointment to the Wauwatosa Economic Development Advisory Board and a member of the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Strategic Council for the Zoo Interchange. She is also a board member of the Public Policy Forum, Competitive Wisconsin and Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, and chairman of the Public Policy Committee for the Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Council and co-chairman of the American Lung Association’s annual gala fundraising event.

Kuhn received her bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She resides in Wauwatosa with her husband and children.
