Upcoming Events at Mount Mary College

Mount Mary College invites the public to attend upcoming events being held on campus at the end of March.

Author Samuel Hazo will appear on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in Helfaer Hall. Limited copies of The Song of the Horse, A Selection of Poems 1958-2008 by Hazo, will be available for purchase and signing.

Helfaer Hall is located in the first floor of Caroline Hall at 2900 N. Menomonee River Parkway, Milwaukee. The event is free.

Samuel Hazo is the author of poetry, fiction, essays, various works of translation and four plays.

He is the founder and director of the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, PA. Hazo has received numerous awards during his writing career including the Maurice English Poetry Award and the Griffin Award for Creative Writing from the University of Notre Dame, his alma mater. He was also the first State Poet of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. More information about Samuel Hazo can be found at www.samuelhazoauthor.com.

On Monday, March 29, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Mount Mary will host an evening benefit for Haiti reconstruction efforts. The event begins at 5:00. in the Alumnae Dining Room located in Bergstrom Hall at 2900 N. Menomonee River Parkway in Milwaukee. The event is open to the public with ample free parking available. Goodwill offerings will be accepted and donated to Voice of Haiti (http://www.vwaayiti.org).

The cultural and educational program will feature the following:

Lecture on Haitian culture and historical perspectives by Dr. Belgarde-Smith, Professor of Africology at UW-Milwaukee

Performance of "Song for Haiti – Because We Are One: Disaster Relief Song" composed by Dr. Abraham Caceres, Mount Mary College world music professor, and performed by Mount Mary’s Gospel Choir, student musicians and drummers from

Ko-Thi Dance Company

Fair trade market featuring many Haitian goods

Traditional meal of beans and rice

On Wednesday, March 31, 2009, at 7:00 p.m., “Women In Music: Someone Will Remember Us” will be presented as a special women’s history month concert. The concert features Lauren Pelon, an international performer, and will take place in Helfaer Hall located in Caroline Hall at 2900 N. Menomonee River Parkway in Milwaukee.

Playing approximately 25 ancient and modern instruments, her program features singing and instrumental music from ancient Greece, medieval and renaissance Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. She traces the story of women in music and celebrates music written by, or for, women.

Pelon studied the history of music and instrumentation both in America and overseas. She has performed in concerts in the United States, Canada, Europe, China, Russia, New Zealand and Australia, as well as on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.”
