Wauwatosa Resident Heads to Nicaragua to Help

Sept. 20, 2009 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa resident, Chelsea Kapitan-Daniel, daughter of Eddee Daniel and Lynn Kapitan, has been commissioned as a Cap Corps volunteer.

Cap Corps is a Franciscan Capuchin volunteer ministry, geared to college age students and graduates, who wish to emulate the example of St. Francis of Assisi and serve the poor and disenfranchised.

Chelsea, a graduate of St. Norbert College, De Pere, will be providing service to Cantera, a community based organization run by the Agnesian sisters in Managua, Nicaragua. Cantera focuses on youth and economic development.

“I have been on three other mission trips to Nicaragua as well as Peru and have been transformed through these amazing experiences, working among some of the most humble and generous people, especially children, I have ever met” Chelsea explains. “While at St. Norbert, I studied Spanish, sociology, and peace and justice issues, such as human trafficking and global poverty, while working at the Peace and Justice center. This Cap Corps opportunity was a perfect opportunity to serve others, particularly children.”

The Capuchins are an international community of friars modeling themselves

after St. Francis of Assisi. The brothers of the Capuchin Province of St.

Joseph, headquartered in Detroit, serve in a variety of ministries including

social service, schools, chaplaincy, retreat houses and parishes in Michigan,

Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, Minnesota, New Mexico, Arizona,

California, Nicaragua, and Panama. Established at Mt. Calvary Wisconsin in

1857, there are currently 184 members in the St. Joseph province.
