Global Union, a free festival of world music and culture, returns to Milwaukee’s beautiful Humboldt Park on Saturday, September 21, from noon – 6 p.m. Artists from Pakistan, Argentina, Haiti, Quebec, and Algeria will travel to Milwaukee for a festival that celebrates individual expression and global commonality. Food and merchandise vendors will have items available for purchase.
The lineup for the day includes:
Tal National - A domestic phenomenon in Niger, they’ve had several #1 songs in their home country and are constantly featured on national TV. Despite their popularity, they sell their discs on the street, at roundabouts, since there is no distribution system in the country. Tal National’s last CD pressing sold out in just one day.
Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers – One of Pakistan’s most esteemed Qawwali ensembles. Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers are direct descendants of the first Qawwali choirs dating back to the 13th century. Now the torch-bearers of more than 700 years of this mystical Sufi devotional singing tradition, Qawal Najmuddin Saifuddin & Brothers will travel from their home in Karachi to share this magical musical experience.
The Masonic Wonders - The longest continually-performing Black Gospel quartet in Milwaukee, the Masonic Wonders were formed by members of a Masonic lodge in 1956. They are currently led by Charles McCullum and Charles Carter, original members of the group. They have always featured the close harmonies of three background vocalists supporting a fiery lead singer, with a backing band centered on electric guitar, bass and drums that has had an interracial lineup since the late 1980s.
Nomadic Massive - Montreal’s Nomadic Massive has firmly established itself as a group of premier performers and skilled musicians in a genre that has evolved from its early days of two turntables and a microphone. These musical nomads from Algeria, Haiti, Argentina and Canada represent an open-minded Hip-Hop which finds its inspiration in the traditions of the past; combining live instrumentation, samples, and a wide array of vocal styles.
