Assurant Health announces $230,000 in grants to 7 local agencies

Assurant Health, through the Assurant Foundation, today announces grants totaling $230,000 to seven local agencies that address hunger, homelessness, and health and wellness for children.

"Assurant Health is very pleased to provide these grants to support community members in need. Our company has been headquartered in Wisconsin for 120 years, and we are committed to supporting the work of these seven agencies to improve the lives of children and families in Milwaukee," said CEO and President Adam Lamnin. “In these difficult economic times, our focus is on providing essential services such as food and shelter, and protecting the health of at-risk children."

Sherrie Tussler, executive director of Hunger Task Force, one of the grant recipients, said:
“Feeding hungry children in need is among the most important things we do. Thanks to the generosity of Assurant Health, Milwaukee moms facing tough times now will have continued access to infant formula.”

Cindy Krahenbuhl, executive director of The Guest House, said: “We’ve always been a forward-thinking organization providing innovative services, but this gift from Assurant Health, through the Assurant Foundation, is catapulting us forward. This will allow us to transition and implement a program, called Housing First, to get people into a place they can call their own rather than requiring them to stay a lengthy time in a shelter.”

Here is the full list of grant recipients:
• Hunger Task Force, $50,000 for infant formula, milk and cereal to feed children, from infants to age 2, for one year.
• Guest House, $50,000 for the Housing First program for homeless individuals.
• Pathfinders, Inc., $40,000 to support a drop-in center that provides activities and a safe haven for homeless teens.
• COA Youth and Family Centers, $35,000 for wrap-around health and wellness youth programming for a new Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin clinic.
• Milwaukee Rescue Mission, $30,000 for breakfast for hundreds of men, women and children during the months of November and December.
• Penfield Children’s Center, $15,000 to improve behavioral health for at-risk children under 6.
• Pearls for Teen Girls $10,000 to help reduce teen pregnancy, and increase high school graduation and college entry rates.
