Historic Milwaukee Mansion is 2012 WBCS, Inc. Showhouse for a Cure

May 30, 2012

The 2012 WBCS, Inc. Showhouse for a Cure features a beautiful home in Milwaukee’s North Point Historic District. The Vogel Mansion was built in 1905 and features formal gardens and a pool, a 20-room interior that is exquisitely enhanced by carved woodwork and decorative ironwork, a formal dining room, gourmet kitchen, and the private art collection of the homeowner. Located across from Villa Terrace, the home will be open to the public Saturday, June 2 through Sunday, June 17. This year’s house has been made available by businessman Andy Nunemaker.

The Vogel Mansion was built for grain merchant William D. Sawyer and his wife Pauline Nunnemacher Sawyer. The elegant structure combines features of Mediterranean, French and Tudor Revival styles, giving it the stately appearance of a country manor.

Prominent architects, Parker & Thomas of Boston and Milwaukee architects, Bruemming and Dick, designed the 6,000 square foot home, which was built at a cost of $35,000. A year later, a nearly 3,500 square foot, two-story stable/carriage house was added at an additional cost of $16,000. The stable/coach house was separated from the residence by a courtyard, and a tunnel was built to facilitate passage from one structure to the other during inclement weather.
The focus of the exterior is on the dramatic entrance area, which features a pair of ornate wrought iron doors. The use of finely-crafted wrought iron is a repeated stylistic feature of the house. The centerpiece of the tall wrought iron fence surrounding the estate is an exquisite pair of French-style entrance gates, designed by renowned Milwaukee artisan, Cyril Colnik.

Old-world craftsmanship is also evidenced throughout the interior of the house. Some of the details are original to the 1905 construction and some resulted from a 1929 remodeling project. The front hall features four Corinthian scagliola columns with gold leaf trim and marble bases.

In 2011, two rooms on the second floor were transformed into a master bedroom suite and the back yard was converted into a swimming pool area. The basement, as part of the WBCS, Inc. Showhouse redesign project, is now completely reconfigured into a continuous room for socializing and entertaining.

Since 1998, WBCS, Inc. has raised more than $4.4 million for breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
