Love Waze? You could use it to carpool soon

Could the navigation app Waze find itself competing more with Lyft and Uber?

According to The Wall Street Journal, Google is planning a significant expansion of Waze's carpool service, which encourages users to pick up other users who are on the same route.

Google had been testing the service in Israel — where Waze was founded — and San Francisco, but plans involve expanding to cities in the U.S. and Latin America over the next several months, says the report.

Waze is among the most popular navigation apps available, taking a crowdsourced approach by allowing users to report information such as delays or accidents on their routes. In 2013, Google acquired Waze for $1 billion.

The Waze service would focus on carpooling, unlike Lyft or Uber where users can request a ride similar to a taxi service. Uber offers a similar service called Uberpool, where users can split the cost of a ride if they're on the same route. Lyft operates a similar service called Lyft Line.
