Kevin King: What scouts say

Bob McGinn
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Here’s what NFL personnel people told the Journal Sentinel’s Bob McGinn about Washington cornerback Kevin King before the draft:

Washington Huskies defensive back Kevin King makes an interception in the end zone against wide receiver N'Keal Harry of the Arizona State Sun Devils on Nov. 19, 2016 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, Washington.

AFC scout: “He’s played safety, corner. Was not highly rated until the combine. When people saw how he ran and moved around his stock went up. He’s a little leggy. I think change of direction and quicker receivers will be a challenge for him. It (comparison to Richard Sherman) is a stretch.”

AFC scout: “He’s a finesse press corner. I don’t know if he’s physical enough for Ted (Thompson). But he is long, and I like long. He’s a smart kid. He’s going to go 28 to 32. He’s got to use his length.”

NFC scout: “The size is redeeming but there’s some stiffness that goes with it. The system they played was just bail and let everything go underneath. Guys can separate from him. Really good ball skills. Space tackling will be an issue.”

NFC scout: “I love him. I like him better than the other people here. Needs to be in the right scheme. He’s long, athletic, can run. Obviously, he’s a better press guy but he does have pretty good feet for his size. Great ball skills. He’s a Seattle guy, a single-high Cover 3 man kind of guy.”

NFC scout: “Big guy. Ran fast. He just doesn’t move well enough. Not productive at all. He just gets beat all the time. Very limited toughness in the run game.”

AFC scout: “Long, lean press corner that can really run. Good prospect. We preferred Sidney Jones a slight touch.”

AFC scout: “Third or fourth round. He’s not in the class as Sidney Jones but he is really tall. Long arms, slender calves. I didn’t see the deep burst. OK tackler. Played a lot of zone. He can close. Good hands in the (pre-game) drills.”

NFC scout: “If you look at the tape, he’s not a first-round pick. If you look at the combine, he’s a top-10 pick.”

AFC scout: “King will go late first round. There’s a lot of buzz on him.”

AFC scout: “Love him. I’d rather get him in the second round.”

NFC scout: “He’s big and he’s fast. No problems with him. He looks like the kind of guy you can line up in press coverage. I don’t think he’s that skinny. Good kid all the way. I think he’s a second-rounder.”

AFC scout: “I see him as a solid second-rounder. Hard to see first round with him. Thin and long. He was good at reading hips. Instinctive player. Good break. Thought he could recover. Flashes short burst, especially for his size. Ball aware. Liked him in press. Leaky tackler. He had willingness to tackle. It was just his frame. He kind of slid down the pole a little bit. He’d tackle up high but just didn’t have enough force to get him down.”
