One day after the arrests of six Notre Dame football players, coach Brian Kelly kicked off senior safety Max Redfield and indefinitely suspended senior cornerback Devin Butler.

Butler was jailed early Saturday for resisting law enforcement and battery of an officer, both potential felonies.

Notre Dame, which will open the season Sept. 4 at Texas, opens the season at No. 9 in the Amway Coaches Poll and No. 10 in the AP poll.

"The expectations we set for the members of our team are high, but they are especially so for the upperclassmen who are expected to provide leadership and a positive example to the other members of the team," Kelly said in a statement. "Max, and at least this stage in the review of his case, Devin, have failed in that regard and so have lost the privilege of continuing to be part of our team."
