Recap of the 2017 Indy 500 crashes

INDIANAPOLIS – Pole sitter Scott Dixon was involved in the first wreck of the day, one of the scarier wrecks in recent history. Debris from the wreck of one native Hoosier took out one of the four rookies. The final wreck of the day involved four cars in the middle of the pack, setting up a shootout for the finish.

Lap 56

Dixon’s surreal month at Indianapolis Motor Speedway came to an end in a violent crash. After suffering issues with his car throughout the race, Jay Howard hit the wall and proceeded to slide down the track. Dixon was unable to avoid Howard, went airborne and flew into the catch fence. The wreck resulted in a red flag that lasted several minutes as safety crews repaired the fence and track.

Dixon walked away from wreck mostly uninjured, but reported back to the infield medical center and left with a boot on his left foot. He finished 32nd.Howard was uninjured in the wreck and his comeback to IndyCar saw him finish 33rd.

Lap 67

Noblesville native Conor Daly tried to make a move on the outside of Charlie Kimball, but instead got high and connected hard with the wall.

Doyel:Fernando Alonso won everything but the race

Daly’s car was not the only one involved in the accident; rookie Jack Harvey ran over debris from the wreck. He spun out and made contact with the inside wall. Harvey finished the race 31st, Daly 30th.

Lap 184

Following a restart with just 16 laps to go, Oriol Servia got into the back of James Davison, sending him into the wall. The wreck also collected Will Power and James Hinchcliffe, knocking them out of the race. Josef Newgarden's car suffered some damage in the wreck, but was able to finish the race.

Davison was filling in for the injured Sebastien Bourdais. After starting last on the grid, he worked his way up as high as second. He finished the race 20th, with Servia, Hinchcliffe and Power filling the next three positions.
