With two narrow victories over Nicolet, the Wauwatosa East boys volleyball team came away with the tournament championship at its own invitational on Sept. 17.

The Red Raiders opened pool play with a 25-8, 25-17 win over Shorewood and a 25-16, 25-15 sweep of Westosha Central.

In the first of two three-set matches with Nicolet, Wauwatosa East dropped the first set, 19-25, but rallied for a victory with set wins of 29-27 and 15-11.

By easily dispatching Waukesha West in the semifinals, 25-14, 25-20, Wauwatosa East set up a rematch with Nicolet in the championship match.

The Red Raiders led, 24-22, in the first set, but the Knights scored twice to even the match. On its third match point, Wauwatosa East closed out the match at 27-25 on a kill by Aaron Plaisted.

Kills by Eric Winter gave Wauwatosa East leads of 25-24 and 26-25 in the second set. An errant serve allowed Nicolet to even the match at 26, and the Knights went on to even the match with a 28-26 win.

A 5-0 run in the decisive third set turned a 5-4 lead into a 10-4 advantage. The Red Raiders didn't look back, sealing the invitational win with a 15-11 victory.

Wauwatosa East was scheduled to face Cedarburg on Sept. 20 and West Allis Hale on Sept. 21 before hosting crosstown rival Wauwatosa West on Sept. 22.
