The Wauwatosa West baseball team ended the regular season with a 9-20 record after falling in four of its final five games.
Because the Trojans did not qualify for last week's Woodland Conference tournament, Wauwatosa West played three games in the consolation bracket.
Wauwatosa West lost to Pewaukee and Greenfield on July 5 before bouncing back to beat Brown Deer on July 6. The Trojans then dropped both games of its July 9 wood bat tournament, losing to Marquette and Homestead.
Jacob Greenberg and the Trojans were cruising along with a 2-0 lead until Greenfield struck for five runs in the sixth inning to pull out a 5-2 win.
The Trojans took the lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Jake Brophey and a wild pitch that scored Greenberg.
Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Greendale in the sixth. Greenberg then hit a batter and walked another to force in two runs to tie the game.
An error scored two more runs for Greenfield, while Alex Laboy made it 5-2 with an RBI single off reliever Noah Katula.
Katula eventually got out of the inning by inducing a double play.
J.J. Morgan singled to start the seventh for Wauwatosa West, but the next three Trojans were retired in order to end the game.
Although it is the second seed in its sectional, Pewaukee was in the consolation bracket of the Woodland Conference tournament thanks to a fifth-place finish in the Woodland West.
The Pirates scored seven times in the first inning en route to a 12-0 win over the Trojans.
Five of the seven runs Pewaukee scored in the first inning off Wauwatosa West starter Logan Scharf were unearned. The Pirates added three in the second and two in the third.
Ryan Greener gave up five runs in two innings of relief, while Tyler Schackmuth pitched a scoreless frame.
Pirate starter Patrick Tomfohrde limited the Trojans to just three hits in the five-inning game.
Will Jushka tossed six scoreless innings to lead Wauwatosa West to a 6-0 win over Brown Deer.
Morgan drove home Greenberg to put the Trojans up 1-0 in the first. A passed ball scored a run for Wauwatosa West in the second, and a wild pitch plated another in the third.
Scharf scored on a Morgan sacrifice fly in the fourth, while another run-scoring passed ball made it 5-0. The Trojans executed a double steal to grab a run in the sixth, as Morgan stole second and Greenberg stole home.
Jushka walked five but gave up just two hits and struck out five in his six innings. Greener pitched the seventh to secure the shutout.
Wood Bat Tournament
Wauwatosa West hosted Marquette and Homestead for a wood bat tournament at Breitlow Field on July 9.
The Trojans opened the tournament with a 12-1 loss to Marquette.
The Hilltoppers turned a 3-1 lead into a rout with three runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Katula started for the Trojans and allowed three earned runs over three innings. Greener was hit for six earned runs in 2/3 of an inning, while Shackmuth needed just one pitch to get one out.
Wauwatosa West kept it close against Homestead until the Highlanders pulled away late in a 6-1 win.
LeRoy Coleman led off the third with a single and scored on a Greenberg triple to cut Homestead's lead to 2-1. The Highlanders got that run back in the fourth and added three insurance runs in the seventh.
Greenberg started and went two innings for the Trojans before giving way to Nick Price, who gave up just one earned run over five innings.
Homestead starter Joe Pajella limited Wauwatosa West to three hits and struck out 10 in a complete game.
Wauwatosa West received the No. 11 seed in the Brookfield Central sectional. The Trojans were scheduled to face No. 6 seed Wauwatosa East in a regional semifinal July 12 with the winner advancing to face No. 3 seed Waukesha North on July 15.
