The Wauwatosa West girls basketball team crushed Milwaukee North, 70-29 on Tuesday night in a WIAA Regional quarterfinal game at West, setting up a re-match with crosstown rival Tosa East in the regional semifinals on Friday at East.

Game time is 7 p.m. and the Trojans will be looking for revenge after dropping a 45-43 decision on Jan. 23 at Tosa East. The win over the Blue Devils snapped an 8-game losing streak and have lost 16 of 18 games. West did not play like a team that has a 4-19 overall record.

“I think everytime you play Tosa East you throw records out the door,” West coach Ashley Imperiale said. “I told the girls in the locker room I know you are excited, but we have to focus on getting better these next two days.”

Fast start

The Trojans followed the game plan scoring quickly off transition baskets and raced to a 10-0 lead before North scored. Five different players scored in the run. Megan Stoffel on a layup off an inbounds pass; Emma Clough put in a rebound basket; Amanda O’Rourke and Libbi Fassbender scored on fastbreak baskets and Gaby Zabala hit a jumper.

Brittney McGill hit a 3-pointer and a basket to cut it to 10-5, Emily Wagy hit two free throws and McGill hit another 3 to make it 12-8 before West put the game out of reach with a 14-1 run as six different players scored to make it 26-9 at the 8:30 mark.

After McGill scored on a drive and a foul shot to make it 26-12, The Trojans defense blanked the Blue Devils and finished the half with a 22-0 run to make it 47-12 at halftime. Cheri’A Adams had 6 points and Anna Roghan added 4 points in the run.

“We knew we had more numbers than they did, so whenever we got a rebound we told them, ‘get out, get out, get out,’” Imperiale said. “Our ball movement went well when we played with poise and got the ball in the middle. We need to work on our composure under pressure. We need someone to get the ball and get us settled.”

Adams finished with 10, Wagy added 9 and O'Rourke had 8 as all 12 trojans scored. McGill led North with 14 points.
