The Tosa Swordfish wound down their short-course season with a few more successful swim meets.
To begin, the 12-and-under athletes competed at the Speedo Sprint Cup Challenge at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Jan. 28. Alexander Repikov (12) placed fifth in the 50 backstroke (34.33), setting a new team record, as well as new records in the 100 individual medley and 50 freestyle.
The team's 10-year-olds made a splash, beginning with Julian Cortright (10) walking away with first place in the 50 breaststroke and second-place finishes in the 100 IM, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Meghan Cady (10) grabbed third in the 50 butterfly and sixth place in the 50 breaststroke. Drew Miler (10) swam an impressive meet with third-place finishes in the 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle. His sister, Anna Miler (10), grabbed sixth in the 50 backstroke.
The Speedo Sprint Cup Challenge hosted great performances from Nikki Cornwall (12) in her 100 IM and Lizzie Martinson (11) in the 50 butterfly. Teammates Greta Dietzler (12) and Eva Ruark (10) swam for personal records in 50 freestyle, while Owen Ruark (9) dropped time in the 50 breaststroke.
Following the Speedo meet was the February Freeze meet hosted by Lake Country Swim Team on Feb. 11 and 12. Tosa swam one of its best meets of the season. New team records were posted by Gavin Steele (8) in the 100 backstroke (1:47), Cady in the 100 butterfly (1:26) taking fourth place and Julian Cortright (10) with his 200 IM (2:49) claiming first place. Lauren Malinowski (13) swam the 200 freestyle in a new team record of 2:03.
Cortright continued swimming strong, earning state-qualifying times in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 200 IM, totaling ten state cuts to date. Olivia Small (10) earned her fifth state time in 100 backstroke, placing fourth as well as sixth-place finishes in the 100 IM and 50 freestyle. Anna Miler grabbed her second state-qualifying time in the 50 butterfly with a sixth-place finish while securing fifth place in the 50 backstroke.
Maeve Haley (12) and Isabel Jensen (12) represented Tosa well with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle and a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly, respectively.
Many of the Swordfish had personal-best times posted at this meet, including Samantha Bartelt (11) in 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, and 100 freestyle, Jacquelyn Brown (9) in 50 butterfly while sister, Madelyn Brown (11), swam a PR in the 100 breaststroke. Ellie Cady (14), Nora Engbring (13), Maeve Haley (12) and Lauren Cortright (14) crushed their times in the 500 freestyle. Fallon Cortright (8) took seven seconds off her 50 freestyle while Vivian Falk (9) cut time in the 50 butterfly. Emma Karras (14) and Bella Minahan (13) performed best times in their 100 backstroke.
The Swordfish are busy preparing for the State Championship meets taking place the next few weekends.
