With seniors Danny Larson and Cal Hartt each qualifying in multiple individual events, the Wauwatosa Hurricanes boys swimming and diving team is sending seven entries to the state meet.
Wauwatosa took fifth place as a team at the WIAA Division 1 sectional on Feb. 11 at Homestead High School, accumulating 240 points to finish behind Arrowhead (398), Brookfield (337), West Bend (266) and Menomonee Falls (247.5).
"I am very proud of all the athletes that competed this weekend in sectionals," Wauwatosa coach Heidi Hegwood said. "We had nearly everyone have a season-best time. Qualifying five individual events and two relays definitely is something to be proud of. I am excited to see what the boys are capable of this weekend at state."
Larson won a sectional title in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 43.19 seconds and qualified in the 100 freestyle by placing second in 46.75 seconds. The University of Pacific recruit was the state champion in the 100 freestyle (46.00 seconds) and the runner-up in the 200 freestyle (1:40.87) in 2016. He was the state runner-up in both events as a sophomore in 2015.
Hartt will be making his first trip to state as an individual, qualifying in the 200 freestyle with a third-place finish in 1:45.43 and in the 100 butterfly by taking third in 52.93 seconds.
Also earning a trip to the state meet for the first time as an individual was junior Caleb Vollmers, who advanced in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.90.
Wauwatosa advanced two relays through as well, with Hartt, Vollmers, junior Nick Thuli and Larson taking third in both the 200 freestyle (1:29.72) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.49).
The WIAA Division 1 state meet is Saturday, Feb. 18, at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. The diving competition will begin at 10 a.m. with the timed swimming finals starting at 3 p.m.
