The Tosa Swordfish competed at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center for South Eastern Aquatics' Penguin Challenge on Jan. 21 and 22.

Tosa's 10-and-under athletes had a great day. Qualifying for state were London Chase (10) in the 100 breaststroke, Lily Bartz (10) in the 50 backstroke and Meghan Cady (9) in the 50 butterfly. Olivia Small (10) and Julian Cortright (9) added to their state event lists. Small earned a state berth in her 100 freestyle and Cortright in both the 50 and 100 butterfly.

Callie Carr (8) grabbed first in the 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly, setting a new team record in both events. Drew Miler (10) earned third place in the 50 backstroke and fourth in the 100 butterfly for his age group. Cortright took home third-place finishes in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 50 butterfly and second place in the 100 butterfly. These finishes secured second place for the high-point award for Cortright. Small swam to fourth place in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle.

Tosa's 13-and-over group represented the team with great finishes. Bridget Thuli (14) placed third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley. Ellie Cady (14) took fourth in the 200 freestyle. Lauren Malinowski (13) set a new team record with a state-qualifying swim, taking first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:24.43. Malinowski continued to set new records in the 50 freestyle (25.46), 100 freestyle (55.78), 200 IM (2:21.19) and took first overall in the high-point award for her age category.

Additional notable performances from Tosa's swimmers include Emma Karras (14) cutting over nine seconds on her 200 freestyle and 200 breaststroke. Ellie Owley (13) took six seconds off her 100 freestyle. Olivia Watters (9) dropped 10 seconds off the 100 freestyle, while teammates Michael Hughes (9) had a personal-best in his 50 backstroke and Audrey Sellinger (8) set a personal-best time in her 50 butterfly.

The Swordfish swim again as a team on Feb. 11 and 12 at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center for the February Freeze Meet.
