Wauwatosa West's girls basketball team began last week with a victory on a buzzer-beater but could not use the momentum as a springboard.
The Trojans were unable to pull an upset over Pius XI or Pewaukee, falling 62-36 to the Popes on Jan. 11 and 67-42 to the Pirates on Jan. 13 to fall to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in the Woodland West.
A putback basket at the buzzer by senior guard Cheri'a Adams lifted Tosa West to a 54-52 win over Waukesha South on Jan. 10.
The Trojans led, 28-22, at halftime, but the Blackshirts battled back before Adams provided the heroics.
Adams led Tosa West with 18 points and four steals. Sophomore guard Irene Phillips scored 13 points; senior forward Dasia Davis added 9 points and nine rebounds; and sophomore forward Kayla Stoffel and junior guard Emma Elliott each had six rebounds.
Tosa West came away with the win despite shooting 24.2 percent (15-for-62) and making just 4 of 24 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Trojans were no match for Pius XI on Jan. 11, as the Popes ran away with a 62-36 victory in a game that was rescheduled after being postponed on Dec. 16 due to a winter storm.
Tosa West outscored the Popes, 26-22, in the second half after trailing, 40-10, at the break.
Junior guard Emily Wagy paced the Trojans with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Margaret Radske finished with 8 points and five rebounds, and Elliott and senior guard Lizzy Fassbender chipped in with 6 points apiece.
Tosa West closed out last week with a 67-42 loss to state-ranked Pewaukee on Jan. 13. The Pirates hit nine 3-pointers, while the Trojans made just two shots from beyond the arc and were just 6-for-18 from the free-throw line.
Davis led Tosa West with 12 points. Adams finished with 10 points, and Phillips added 6 points.
Tosa West will get a quick rematch with Pius XI (8-5, 6-2 Woodland West), as the Trojans will host the Popes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. Pius XI has overcome a four-game losing streak to win three straight over Pewaukee, Tosa West and Greendale.
