Tosa Swordfish Swim Club repeatedly pounded out personal-best performances at the Stateline Aquatic Team's 2016 Winter Classic event at Beloit Memorial High School's 25-yard pool on Nov. 19 and 20.
The Swordfish competed among 267 athletes and made 20 appearances on the podium in the 11 and older events.
Maddie A. Bartz (12) took first place in the 50 and 100 backstroke; 50, 100 and 200 freestyle; and a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Ellie Cady (14) grabbed third in the 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke. Lauren Cortright (14) took first in the 200 freestyle by dropping over six seconds, second in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 200 IM and seventh in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Nora Engbring (12) cut 21 seconds off her 500 freestyle to take first place and placed fourth in the 200 IM. Lauren Wunderlich (12) swam hard to take second in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 50 breaststroke.
Josh Pantuso (11) represented the boys team in placing eighth in the 50 breaststroke.
The 10 and under Swordfish athletes acquired three state-qualifying performances. The new state qualifiers are Anna Miler (10) with her 50 backstroke (third place), Drew Miler (10) in the 100 freestyle (second place) and Julian Cortright (9) in the 100 breaststroke (first place). Other notable events were Lily Bartz (10) placing seventh in the 50 backstroke, Meghan Cady (9) sixth in the 100 butterfly, London Chase (9) fourth in 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
In addition to his state-qualifying event, Cortright also placed third in both the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly, fourth in the 100 butterfly, fifth in the 100 IM and sixth in the 50 freestyle. Anna Miler brought home a fourth-place finish in the 50 breaststroke; took fifth in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke; and took seventh place in the 50 freestyle. Drew Miler grabbed second place in the 50 butterfly; third in the 100 butterfly, 100 IM and 50 freestyle; and seventh in the 50 breaststroke.
Maddie A. Bartz broke her team record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.36. Lauren Malinowski (13) earned first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle. She broke the five-year-old team record in the 100 freestyle (57.14 seconds) and broke her record in the 50 freestyle with 25.64 seconds. Malinowski's state-qualifying time in the 50 freestyle also qualifies her to accompany Team Wisconsin while they attend the Central Zone Championships in August.
The Tosa Swordfish will swim next on Dec. 3 and 4 at the Distance Classic hosted by the Menomonee Falls Swim Club.
