Wauwatosa East sophomore Henry Wellenstein wrapped up his strong season at the WIAA Division 1 state cross-country meet held Oct. 29 at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
Wellenstein completed the 5,000-meter course in 16:55.68 to take 69th place.
"It’s so easy to get caught up in the excitement of the meet and start the race too fast, but Henry ran a smart race," Wauwatosa East boys cross-country coach Mackenzie Laska said. "He steadily moved up from 126th place at the 1 mile to 96th at the 2 mile and was still outside the top 80 with less than a half mile to go."
Finn Gessner of Madison LaFollette won the Division 1 individual boys state championship with a time of 15:22.13. The Division 1 boys team championship went to Madison West.
Wellenstein is the seventh Red Raider boys cross-country member to qualify for state as an individual in school history, joining Aaron Gibbs (2000), Laska (2005), Jacob James (2007), Dan Gagne (2010), Matt Schmidt (2010) and Sam Potter (2015).
"He handled the pressure and expectations very well," Laska said. "It’s tough for anyone, but I was particularly impressed by his poise as a first-time qualifier as a sophomore.
"Henry improved his PR from 17:41 in 2015 down to 16:39 this season and went from running in a varsity race once last season to being the top Tosa East runner in all but one race this year."
