Traveling across town to Wauwatosa West High School on Aug. 20, the Wauwatosa East girls swimming and diving team took ninth place at the 11-team Early Bird Invitational.
The Red Raiders earned 93 team points to edge Cudahy by 1 point for ninth. New Berlin West finished in eighth with 116 points.
Freshman Anne Marie Tuffnell had Wauwatosa East's best finish, placing ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.87. She also placed 12th in the 50 freestyle at 28.03.
Junior Ingrid Meulemans finished 11th in the 500 freestyle (6:08.83) and 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:15.44). Junior Elizabeth Peura was 11th in 100 back (1:10.68) and 14th in the 200 freestyle (2:15.47). Sophomore Anna Busalacchi was 16th in the 200 freestyle (2:17.45) and the 100 backstroke (1:14.79). Junior Anna Martin finished 16th in the 100 freestyle (1:04.71), and senior Zoe Hawthorne was 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.50).
Meulemans, Tuffnell, Peura and senior Abby Gifford finished fifth in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:54.44. Meulemans, Tuffnell, Busalacchi and Peura swam a 4:10.95 in the 400 freestyle to place seventh.
Also swimming for Wauwatosa East were senior Madeline Ladd, sophomore Ellie Romfoe, sophomore Amaya Ibanez-Baldor, freshman Kelly Onan, junior Perry Smith, junior Emily Pessefall and sophomore Ally Rettler.
WAUWATOSA EAST GIRLS TENNIS
The Red Raiders girls tennis team opened its season by dropping three matches at its own invitational at Hart Park on Aug. 15 and 16.
Wauwatosa East was swept 7-0 by Germantown, Oshkosh West and Pewaukee.
Mary McMahon, Allison Gleesing, Kat Terwelp, Aylin Ikizek, Ellie Murphy and Katie Swenson all competed at singles for the Red Raiders. Erin O'Brien teamed with Terwelp and Gleesing at No. 1 doubles, Alyssa Poe with Swenson and Ikizek at No. 2 doubles and Hanna Green with Claire Purcell or Megan Collins at No. 3 doubles.
Wauwatosa East was scheduled to participate in the Racine Case Invitational on Aug. 20, but the tournament was cancelled because of rain.
