Again this year, the Milwaukee County Zoo is displaying a special “Giving Tree” in the Zoo’s U.S. Bank Gathering Place. Visitors can select an ornament from the tree, which features an animal enrichment request from the zookeepers such as a food treat, toy, gift card or monetary donation. The enrichment is used throughout the year to enhance all aspects of the animal’s welfare by addressing the behavioral, environmental, physical, psychological and social needs of the species.
The “Giving Tree” will be decorated with handmade ornaments created by the Zoological Society’s Zoo Pride volunteers. Each ornament will feature the name of an enrichment item needed, the name of the animal to receive the item, the cost of the item and information as to where the item may be purchased. The public can choose an ornament for their favorite animal and then purchase the item themselves, or make a monetary donation, and the Zoo will purchase the item.
The gifts can be dropped off at the Zoo’s Administration Office in the U.S. Bank Gathering Place. Let the gate attendant know you’re visiting on behalf of the Giving Tree.
The “Giving Tree,” which will be on display through Dec. 31, will feature more than 150 different gift ornament suggestions including the following:
- Gorillas: 8 x 10 canvas boards
- Meerkat: Outward hound star spinner toy puzzle
- Aquarium and Reptile: Pacific Produce gift card for tasty treats
- Polar Bear: Plastic saucer sled
- Humboldt Penguins: Chuck it heliflight fetch toy
