The Wauwatosa Police Department is honoring all officers, including those who have given their lives in service to their communities, with a monument located outside the department at 1700 N. 116th St.
Ground was broken on the monument in the spring of 2016 and it was dedicated in a private ceremony Oct. 25.
According to Lt. Brian Zalewski, the design of the new outdoor tribute area and the wording on the stones was the work of a Wauwatosa PD Memorial Committee that was brought together in the fall of 2013 following the death of Wauwatosa PD officer Jennifer Sebena. The committee said in a mission statement that they exist to ensure that any Wauwatosa Police employee who dies as the result of an on duty or line of duty incident is honored for their service and sacrifice.
In addition to fallen officers, Zalewski said the committee wanted to honor all officers and civilian support staff, and they demonstrated that ideal with their wording on the monument.
The monument reads: "This tribute is dedicated to the men and women, past, present and future, who have selected the path of public safety. To those who assume personal risk in exchange for the safety of our neighbors and strangers alike. To those who serve the community in all conditions before considering their own personal comfort. To those who work every day and every night while their loved ones provide support and a place to restore. May they be safe, determined and resolute in all they do."
