Library lecture to address existentialism and anxiety

The Wauwatosa Public Library is hosting a lecture by Gregory Sadler, an educator, speaker and philosophical counselor, on the topics of existentialism, anxiety and human freedom, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, in the library's Firefly Room.

Themes of anxiety and human freedom are central to existentialist philosophy and literature. How should we approach, embrace or distance ourselves from anxiety? Is anxiety the same thing as fear? Does being free make us anxious? And what should we do with our freedom?

In this lecture and discussion, Sadler will outline attitudes towards anxiety and its implications about human freedom in the thought of several key existentialist authors, in particular Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Kafka, Heidegger, Sartre and de Beauvoir.
