Name revealed of
newborn female giraffe
The newest addition to the Milwaukee County Zoo, a reticulated female giraffe calf finally has a name.
Approximately 6,000 votes were cast to name the giraffe, born at the zoo in April to first-time mother Marlee and dad Bahatika.
Voters from 35 states chose the name 'Zola,' a word from African origin meaning 'to love,' according to a news release from Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele's office.
'I'd like to thank everyone here in Milwaukee and all around the country who participated in helping us choose a name for our new giraffe, Zola,' Abele said in a statement. 'Zola means 'to love,' which is a fitting name considering how much there is to love at the Milwaukee County Zoo. I hope everyone is able to get out to the Zoo this summer to meet Zola!'
Zola joins Tafari, a male giraffe born at the zoo in September 2015. The public was invited to help choose a name for Tafari after he was born last year. More than 5,000 votes were cast.
