The Wisconsin state budget delay is impacting the completion of the north leg of the Zoo Interchange project.
The current proposed budget and Gov. Scott Walker are forwarding a plan that would allocate funds for work on Interstate 94 south of Milwaukee and delay work on Highway 41/45 north of the Zoo Interchange. The focus of the work on I-94 is related to the $3 billion in subsidies as a part of the agreement to bring Foxconn Technology Group to Wisconsin.
Wauwatosa Communications Manager Melissa Weiss said city officials have stated earlier this year that it is important for the city of Wauwatosa for the Zoo Interchange to be constructed without further delays.
"Since construction has started, traffic on Wauwatosa roads has significantly increased and construction is impactful on our residents and the community as a whole," Weiss said.
Wauwatosa Alderman Dennis McBride, who serves on the city's transportation committee, said it is time for the state to end the nearly decade-long project.
"To leave something like this incomplete is a detriment to our city," McBride said. "The state owes it to all of us to get this finished."
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has closed bidding on some of the aspects for the Zoo Interchange project that are a part of the north leg completion.
"Until the budget passes we don't know what the final plan is," DOT Southeast Region spokesman Michael Pyritz said. "Once that happens we can act accordingly."
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, DOT officials did not say how much the delays could push back the overall project, which is supposed to be finished in 2020.
