Hoyt Park in Wauwatosa was the setting for a Cooking Channel show that is entering its third season.
The crew for the television show Big Bad BBQ Brawl shot an episode at the Landing at Hoyt Park Outdoor Beer Garden Tuesday, July 25.
The show's star is Brooklyn native Shannon Ambrosio, described on the Cooking Channel website as "one of the top barbecue chefs in New York."
"We came here because we wanted to experience BBQ in Wisconsin," showrunner Natalie Freedman said. "And celebrate what you are best known for — beer and cheese."
Ambrosio travels the country to pit his Northeastern barbecue skills against local BBQ chefs and this time chose Ashley's Bar-B-Que at 1501 W. Center St. in Milwaukee as his opponent.
The show's producers asked that the details of the episode be kept quiet until the episode airs in September.
The site was chosen after a recommendation was made to the producers from Wendi Devan, owner of local sausage company Sa Braai. Devan also served as one of the judges for the show along with Joe Laedtke and Heather Terhune, who are also from southeast Wisconsin.
Local residents showed up to witness the event and become a part of the show. Those who sat behind the judges during the shoot were asked to sign waivers so they could appear on the episode.
"It's great to see so many people come out and cheer on the competition," David Paulsen, communications director for the Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool said. "It's not every day that we get a show passing through Hoyt Park."
Tosa resident Jason Sprague was in the crowd watching the shoot and grew hungry as the competition wore on.
"I wish I could eat it, it looks fantastic," Sprague said. "It's interesting to see how TV shows are made."
