The MidTown Tosa Business Association will host the inaugural MidTown Madness 5K Run For Wellness and kids 600-meter dash Saturday, July 22 as part of an effort to promote service, wellness and community in the MidTown region of Wauwatosa.
Tom Kreinbring, a member of the MidTown Tosa Board of Directors, said the 5K is a new effort for the community to come together while supporting the Wauwatosa Public Library Foundation, which is where all the proceeds will go.
When the group was formed in 2015, MidTown members reached out to the East Tosa organization to learn how to organize and improve their business district. Since then MidTown Tosa has collaborated with local government on traffic issues, community outreach and more.
"As the population increases in the area, we want to make sure when redevelopment eventually happens it’s what the citizens want, not what we want," Kreinbring said.
In the future, the business association wants to try to encourage businesses to fill vacant buildings in the area, but only if it’s something the community would support.
"We want to get the neighbors and say, ‘What do you guys want?’ because (they) have to support the businesses and obviously, that's one of the challenges,” he said.
The group is offering free booths at the 5K to businesses, religious organizations, nonprofits and social groups to showcase what’s in the community.
"It’s more than just a race because you can see all the passions that people in their own community have,” Kreinbring said. "It’s (also) a chance for the different neighbors to see that there are opportunities to build the community."
The MidTown Madness 5K Run for Wellness will start at 10 a.m. with the kids 600-meter run starting at 9:30 a.m. The start and finish for both events is at 2435 N. 89th St.
