One honoree in a family is great, two at once is outstanding.
Former Wauwatosa residents Genevieve McBride and her younger brother, Dr. Patrick McBride, are being bestowed with professor emeritus honors, according to information provided by the family.
Patrick will receive his honor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Departments of Medicine and Family Medicine July 1.
Genevieve, a history professor, was honored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with professor emerita status earlier this month.
Both are siblings of Wauwatosa Alderman Dennis McBride. Patrick and Dennis are twin brothers.
The pair are the children of Raymond and Marian “Toni” McBride, long-time Milwaukee newspaper reporters who were inducted into the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame in 2002. The McBride family included a total of seven children who all grew up on Rogers Avenue in Wauwatosa.
Emeritus/Emerita status is an honorary designation conferred upon professors to recognize distinguished service and accomplishments during their university careers. Recommendations for such status begin at the department level and require approval by the dean and the chancellor.
Genevieve McBride graduated from UWM in 1971 and earned a master's degree at Marquette and a Ph.D. from UW-Madison. She has received awards for historical research in numerous scholarly articles and books.
She is an author and has served on the Historical Society’s Board of Curators and as the sole Wisconsin member on the founding advisory board of the proposed National Women’s History Museum in Washington, D.C.
Patrick McBride began teaching at the UW Medical School in 1984. He has been a physician, teacher, researcher and administrator, including serving as dean for students and dean for faculty affairs and as a faculty representative on the UW Athletic Board.
He has published over 200 books and articles on medical education, heart disease and prevention, served on over 25 regional and national guideline panels in primary care and cardiology and brought in millions of dollars in grants to fund research at the medical school. Patrick was honored on Wauwatosa East High School’s “Wall of Inspiration” in 2011.
