A plan that would bring two new restaurants to the Mayfair Mall parking lot has been halted by the Wauwatosa Plan Commission.
The proposal called for an Uncle Julio's, an upscale Mexican restaurant, and Seasons 52, a fresh grill and wine bar with a seasonal menu, to be built on the northeast corner of Mayfair Road and North Avenue, at 2300 N. Mayfair Road.
The site is currently occupied by a 10-story office building that does not have any tenants. A proposal to tear down the office building and put in a single-story business is what prompted Wauwatosa officials to pause the project.
"Before we approve low-density projects we want to see that (the developer) is going to replace the density," Alderman Joel Tilleson said. "We have a good partner in Mayfair and we expect them to meet us halfway with our long-term plans."
The developer for both restaurants is GGP, a retail real estate company headquartered in Chicago that owns and operates Mayfair Mall. GGP did not respond to requests for comments regarding the commission's reaction to their plans.
"This is one of the busiest intersections in the state and they are proposing to take down a high-rise," Tilleson said. "We are standing up for the taxpayers here. We need our partners to help us with our density and tax base goals."
GGP and Mayfair Mall General Manager Chris Jaeger were asked to come back to the commission with a long-term plan before the matter would be considered again.
