For only the second time in its program history, the Wauwatosa West Mock Trial team advanced to the semifinal round of the State Bar of Wisconsin Mock Trial competition.
The next round of the competition will be held Saturday, March 11 in Madison.
Wauwatosa West will be one of the two teams advancing from the Waukesha Regional round held Feb. 11 at the Waukesha County Courthouse. West finished third in the 13-team competition where students presented both prosecution and defense sides of a criminal case situation prepared by members of the State Bar Public Education Committee.
West's 11-member squad won three of the four rounds in which the team participated. They are led by senior Steven Anthony, a four-year participant; the team includes two other seniors — second-year participant Rayna Klatt and first-year member Allison Wendler.
The third place finish advanced the Trojans due to a rule that allows only one team from a single school to advance to the state competition. The first and second place teams were both from Brookfield Academy.
Chris Benes of the Wauwatosa West Social Studies Department serves as the faculty moderator for the group and is assisted by both Saba Ali, an alumnus of the West Mock Trial program, and Wauwatosa attorney Lindsey D. Draper.
