The footprint of St. Camillus is getting bigger.

The expansion of the campus at 10200 West Bluemound Road broke ground on April 14, 2016. The upgrades include a 72-unit assisted living building and new housing for the Jesuit priests and Camillian Order.

"Our campus is 90 years old and we are trying to rejuvenate it," St. Camillus CEO Kevin Schwab said. "We are getting some assets in place for our seniors and build a state of the art facility for years to come."

Assisted living center

Schwab said the new assisted living building will include distinct neighborhoods and an interior design to provide easier navigation and provide "memory joggers" for those with memory loss.

In addition, the new building will have a therapy gym with both indoor and outdoor settings and a variety of additional culinary and recreational spaces for residents and their families. The building is slated to be completed by Nov. 1.

"With Alzheimer's disease and dementia affecting an increasing amount of individuals each year, St. Camillus is proud to expand our community to be able to provide compassionate care to those in need," Schwab said.

Jesuit Building

In addition, the facility is adding a new, 50-unit Jesuit building with its own chapel called the Jesuit Community House. The building, scheduled to be completed this spring, will house the more than 49 retired Jesuit priests and brothers who currently reside at St. Camillus, bringing them together under one roof for the first time in decades.

Also under construction, and scheduled for Nov. 1 completion, is a two-story, 20-unit Community House to house the Camillian Order.

"Our whole complex is interconnected," Schwab said. "A resident, family member or employee does not have to go outside of our facility."

The campus extends from Bluemound Road to Wisconsin Avenue; the bulk of the expansion is on the north end of the grounds.

Future of Kathy's House

In addition to the community expansion, Kathy's House, which leases space from St. Camillus, is located off of 103rd Street and Wisconsin Avenue and has a proposed plan with Froedtert Hospital to move locations in the future. Kathy's House is a hospital guest house that provides lodging and support to those traveling to Milwaukee to receive medical services and has maintained a great relationship with St. Camillus over the years.

"St. Camillus has always thought of Kathy's House Inc. as having a strong mission in the community that matched our mission of caring very congruently," Schwab said. "Currently we have no deadlines or plans for the use of the building that Kathy's House resides in. The lease with Kathy's House is through 2021."

Schwab said St. Camillus is a Life Plan Community that allows seniors to choose their own future and offers a full continuum of services so they are able to do so all in one place. As a Life Plan Community, St. Camillus allows both planning and living to merge through Retirement Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing, Rehabilitation, Home Healthcare, Home Hospice and Care Management.
