The Tosa East Players will open the 2016-17 play season Friday, Dec. 2 in the newly-renovated Dale K. Hidde Theatre with their version of the musical “The World Goes ‘Round.”

A release from the school said the play is “filled with humor, romance, drama and nonstop melody.” The plot features five main characters navigating the world of “love, babies and coffee” and is originally written by the celebrated team of Kander and Ebb.

“These students - from our technicians to our musicians to our performers - have tapped into the heart and deeper meaning of these catchy tunes and are presenting soulful work that will absolutely stir you to your core,” theatre director Kate Sarner said. “Amanda Marquardt, our incredible choreographer, has created several dance pieces that are simultaneously heartbreaking and hopeful. It is a show you don't want to miss.”

The theatre upgrade included replacing the original acoustical panels, installing accessible toilets, new carpet and seating, updated electrical and sound components, as well as a paint scheme that reflects the color palette of the original theater.

The theatre was originally constructed in the 1940s and over the years much of the ornate plasterwork was covered with acoustical panels that were painted which, in turn, diminished the acoustical value of the panels. The renovation project had a cost of about $2.5 million which was paid for by one-time funding created by the closure of the city’s TIF-2 district.

Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) is an economic development financial tool municipalities can use to promote tax base expansion by using property tax revenues to fund site improvements.

“This is an impressive space and reflects the commitment our district has to providing our students with opportunities and excellence in all areas,” Wauwatosa School District Superintendent Phil Ertl said.

Show times for “The World Goes ‘Round” are December 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 7:30 p.m. and December 4 and 11 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and students and $8 for children age 10 and under. Tickets for all Tosa East productions are available for purchase online at www.tosaeasttheatre.org or by calling 866-967-8167, or at the door with cash or check.

Planned for the spring show the East Players will celebrate 77 years of Tosa East Theatre with “Encore! Encore!” a Tony Award-style celebration of every musical theatre production that the Wauwatosa East Players have produced since their inception in 1940.
