There is not a better way to get Wauwatosa residents out of their homes on a Saturday afternoon than offering to fill their stomachs. The East Tosa Alliance held its seventh annual Chili'n On the Avenue Sept. 24 from noon to 8 p.m. on the pavement of North Avenue between 65th and 68th streets.

The centerpiece of the event is a chili cook-off competition that includes awards in the categories Best In Show, Individual Beef and Chicken Chili, Restaurant Chili, Salsa, Showmanship, Best Bloody Mary and People's Choice.

Attendees purchased $1 tickets good for samples of chili at the various stations. Ticket availability was capped in an amount equal to the volume of chili present at the booths.

"We like to draw attention to all we have to offer and give back to the community," East Tosa Alliance President and board chairwoman Maya Romboy said. "We have thriving businesses in East Tosa and that was not always the case."

Sampling the chili was first-time consumer and local resident Melissa Heck. She had never tried chili before but stated she will be eating it again soon.

"I really like it," Heck said. "Especially No. 4 (Red Dot) because it is not spicy and I don't like spicey-ness."

The chili was the main attraction but the event also included a 10-plus person yoga session, activities for the kids, Irish dancers and music.

"It's a nice thing to do on a cooler day," resident Timmel Heck said. 'It's a good community event." Timmel's son summed added, "I like chili and we needed a way to get out of the house," Jeremy said.
