If 2016 was the year of unexpected celebrity breakups, 2017 is looking more like the year of unexpected celebrity couplings.

At least that's the tone being set with the arrival of new photos that appear to show Selena Gomez kissing ... drumroll, please ... The Weeknd.

TMZ was the first to share the photos that were also obtained by Entertainment Tonight and E!, which report that the pics were snapped at a romantic dinner date at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, Calif.

So are pop sweetheart Selena, 24, and R&B bad boy The Weeknd, 26, aka Abel Tesfaye, a new couple? That's unclear, but the images are enough to get fans all riled up (and have terms including "Selena and Abel" trend on Twitter). Here are some of the extreme reactions the makeout pics have garnered.

Absolute shock

Fans didn't see this pairing coming, especially after Gomez recently took a hiatus from the spotlight to focus on her health.

Pure joy

Many thought that the two artists could make beautiful music together, and realized that The Weeknd is probably referencing Gomez on the song Party Monster, when he sings about a girl with a butt "shaped like Selena."

Anger

Others think the pair is mismatched and/or just together for publicity.

Worry about exes

Selena Gomez's old relationship with Justin Bieber is still top of mind for some fans who are concerned that the new relationship will impact future music collaborations. Other celeb watchers are worried that The Weeknd's recent breakup with Bella Hadid might make for new drama, since Selena is friends with Hadid's sister Gigi.
