MENOMONEE FALLS - Trustee Dave Glasgow will become the next village president after defeating Trustee Jeremy Walz in the April 3 election.

Glasgow won 53.3 percent of the vote, and Walz received 46.3 percent, according to unofficial results Tuesday night.

Glasgow, who has been on the board since 2015, will take over for Village President Joseph Helm on April 17, according to Village Clerk Janice Moyer. Helm, who did not seek re-election this year, was elected village president in 2015 and served on the board since 2014.

“I want to give a huge thank-you to the community and a huge thank-you to the residents and businesses for their belief in me," Glasgow said by phone after election results were posted April 3. "It just means a ton to me.”

Glasgow ran on a platform of managing growth in the village and keeping taxes low. He attributed his victory Tuesday night with going door-to-door and meeting voters.

“I've been on the board for three years now, and I have just made it a point to put the businesses and the residents first and to get out there,” he said. “We're here to work for them and to resolve their issues.”

The greatest contrast between Glasgow and Walz was their opinion on the four-story Riverwalk on the Falls apartment development being built north of Main Street and east of Grand Avenue, overlooking the Menomonee River and Mill Pond.

In 2015, Walz voted against a nearly $4 million tax incentive package for the developer, an affiliate of Wimmer Communities LLC. Glasgow voted for the project.

The project, which was supposed to be completed by the end of 2017, ran into construction delays, and the village board voted unanimously last month to push the construction deadline back to May 2019 in exchange for reducing village payments to the developer by $100,000.

The apartment project and contract became a political talking point on social media leading up to the election as a number of Facebook pages became forums for debate.

One page, "Menomonee Falls Taxpayer Association," endorsed Walz and questioned Glasgow's honesty in regard to the project after he said during a village board meeting that he received regular updates about Riverwalk. At least one trustee, Paul Tadda, has denied receiving regular updates during village board meetings.

Tim Newman, a member of the village's community development authority and plan commission, posted in Glasgow's defense on the "Menomonee Falls Political Discussion" page.

"This development is discussed regularly," Newman wrote on March 31. "We all are very aware of the construction delay issues."

Walz could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
