The Wauwatosa East/West wrestling team opened the week with a non-conference win over Johnson Creek and then beat Cudahy/St. Francis and Whitnall handily in Woodland Conference action as the locals continue to improve.
JOHNSON CREEK
Tosa beat Johnson Creek, 49-25, on Jan. 10 at Tosa West to start the week with a non-conference dual match.
The locals had four pins to lead the way - Eric Ehlert at 132 (2 minutes, 34 seconds), Sam Hanrahan at 160 (1:14), Devine Burt at 182 (3:26) and Michael Vogt at 285 (1:04).
Marcus Morrow at 152 won a major decision (14-0) and Max Nelson at 145 won an 8-7 decision.
Tosa also won on three forfeits (Kai Castaneda at 106, AJ Minucci at 120, Ben Reagan at 126).
CUDAHY/ST. FRANCIS
The next day Tosa whipped Cudahy/St. Francis on the road, 58-18.
Michael Meade at 138 (4:43), Nelson (1:07) and Sam Bertz at 160 (1:44) pinned their opponents. Mead was losing 9-3 when he pinned his foe.
"Meade just never stopped wrestling," Morin said, "and good things can happen when you do that."
Castaneda won a 16-4 major decision; Burt won a 7-4 decision and handed his opponent his first loss and John Brennan at 220 won a 5-4 decision.
"Last year, John really had trouble finishing out matches," Morin said. "This year he is in better shape and willing to put in the effort necessary to earn tough wins. He and Burt have been nice anchors at the top end of our lineup."
Minucci, Reagan Morrow, Hanrahan and Matt Miller at 195 won on forfeits.
"Overall, they are a program that is rebuilding so the meet result was never in doubt," coach Kent Morin said. "But there were some very good matches."
WHITNALL
On Friday Tosa beat Whitnall, 43-27.
Reagan won on a forfeit as did Larry Bryant at 195.
Ehlert won a 10-2 major decision as did Meade (13-2), Nelson (9-1) and Castaneda (8-0).
Burt won a 9-5 decision, Brennan won on a pin (1:59) as did Michael Vogt at 285 (5:31).
"This was a really exciting meet that spectators got their money's worth at," Morin said. "We were favored in the dual but that all changed with the first match of the evening.
"AJ Minucci had to injury default after hurting his knee. He was winning the match and I'm pretty confident he would have pinned his man. So this was a 12-point swing in the team score."
Tosa couldn't pin their opponents, getting major decision instead of pins, four points instead of six, and the Falcons took a 21-18 lead.
Then Burt came through again with a solid 9-5 win to tie things up at 21-21. Bryant was awarded a forfeit after the Whitnall wrestler that they put out there was determined to be ineligible for that weight class.
"Then the two big wins of the night happened," Morin said. "Brennan earned a big pin in his match and then in the most exciting match of the evening, Michael Vogt pinned his opponent in 5:31 after losing 5-4 at the time of his pin.
"He has only been with the team for two weeks but is such a nice addition to the team. We are so happy to have him. At that point the meet was guaranteed in the win column."
Tosa improved to 5-1 in the Woodland Conference and 17-4 overall.
They are off until the Janssen Tournament on Jan. 21.
