Tosa wins Silver Division at Invite

Five wrestlers finish 4-0 for the day

Jan. 24, 2012 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa wrestling co-op team finished fifth in the Tom Janssen Invitational on Saturday at Wauwatosa West.

The locals went 3-1 in dual meets, losing to Waukesha West (36-29) and beating Catholic Memorial (51-27), South Milwaukee (49-30) and Wisconsin Lutheran (37-33).

"We were missing four starters which made the day a challenge," Tosa coach Kent Morin said. "We were missing AJ Minucci (knee injury), Eric Ehlert (sick), (Larry) Bryant (taking a career test that was during the first two duals) and (Michael) Vogt (sick)."

Morin felt his team shouldn't have lost to Waukesha West.

"We should have beat Waukesha West," he said. "(Michael) Meade lost a critical match (16-15) and (Sam) Bertz lost another (4-3). Both matches were decided in the last five seconds.

"So with the exception of 10 seconds, we would have won that dual. After losing that dual, we went 3-0 in the Silver Division to win that division."

Five wrestlers finished 4-0 on the day, while two others went unbeaten.

Kai Castaneda, Max Nelson, Alex Comte, Devine Burt and John Brennan went 4-0; Sean McDuffie was 3-0 and Sam Hanrahan was 1-0.

Ben Reagan and Meade were each 3-1 and Marcus Morrow and Larry Bryant were 1-1.

Matt Miller (1-3), Mason Startz (0-2), Bertz (0-3) and Dylan Christman (0-4) also competed.

"So we had five wrestlers who won gold medals by going 4-0 on the day," Morin said. "Because we were in the Silver Division we didn't get the tougher match-ups that we were hoping for.

"But all five guys who won gold medals wrestled well. Alex Comte was the big surprise on the day.

"He just won a varsity spot over the last week and has convinced the coaching staff that he needs to stay in the starting lineup.

"He just keeps moving and as a result good things happen for him."
