Tosa East girls drop 52-37 decision to Wisco

Nine players score, led by Salmon's 10-point outing

Nov. 29, 2011 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa East girls basketball squad played two different halves but still dropped a 52-37 decision to Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday at home in the season opener for both schools.

The first half was a high-scoring affair, as the Vikings led, 32-22, at halftime. They outscored the Red Raiders, 16-11, in each of the first two quarters.

Then in the second half, they won a defensive battle, 20-15, to still win going away. The Vikings had a slim, 8-7, advantage in the third period to take a 40-29 lead into the final period.

However, from there, Wisconsin Lutheran stretched the lead out a bit, winning the quarter 12-8.

Karynda Dupree led all scorers with 14 points, while Hannah Kren added 13 points as eight Vikings got on the scoreboard.

Wisconsin Lutheran had three 3-pointers, but they hit 13-of-20 (.650 shooting percentage) from the free-throw line.

Tosa East only got to the free-throw line 11 times, converting six, for a .545 mark.

Red Raiders coach Rob Hamill had good balance as nine players got on the scoreboard, led by junior swingman Katie Salmon with 10 points, coming on four field goals and 2-for-4 free throws.

Seniors Katherine Oleniczak, Lydia Taylor and Emily Jensen each had five points, with Jensen hitting the only 3-pointer for East.

Junior Cherise Carter had four points and senior Deniesha Kinnebrew, junior Ellen Pickering, junior Alayah Walls and senior Maddie Packard added two points each.

Walls fouled out of the game, which hurt the Red Raiders.

Tosa East will now play two more non-conference games before getting into the Greater Metro Conference race Friday.

The Red Raiders travel to Waukesha North for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday and then Milwaukee Washington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

The Red Raiders' first home game is Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. against Brookfield East, a team that only returned two letter winners from last season.
