The Tosa Swordfish, the Wauwatosa Recreation Department's swim team, competed Nov. 5 and 6 in an eight-team meet at Waukesha South High School. A number of swimmers placed in the top 16 in their individual meets.
The team continues to impress not only in terms of finishes, but also with the personal-best times each participant achieves.
"Our athletes continually prove that our team is competitive," coach Jackie Jecha said. "But I am especially pleased with how our newer swimmers are improving.
"It is our goal to get more of the young swimmers to compete in meets and establish themselves with the rest of the Swordfish."
With about 60 members, the Tosa Swordfish generally has a core group of 15 to 20 athletes who participate in swim meets.
"All members are encouraged to participate in meets; however, due to scheduling conflicts, skill levels and confidence, it is not unusual for developing swimmers to wait a couple of seasons before they test themselves against other teams," Jecha said.
Those swimmers who did compete and finish within the top 16 of their individual event are as follows.
In the 11- and 12-year-old girls events, Elizabeth Peura was 10th in the 100 breaststroke, Ingrid Muelemans was 11th in the 200 freestyle, Megan Krummel was 13th in the 100 breast and Ericha Stuberg was 14th in the 50 free.
Erica Kalberer finished ninth in the 100 breast and 14th in the 200 individual medley in the 13- and 14-year-old girls category.
Ben Meulemans, swimming in the 8-year-old and younger boys events, had an outstanding day, taking first place in the 25 freestyle, 25 backstroke and 25 butterfly.
In the 13- and 14-year-old boys events, Henry Lutz finished fourth in the 100 free and the 100 back; Harrison Winkel was fifth in the 100 back, 13th in the 200 IM and 14th in the 100 free; and Joey Rampolla, was 13th in the 100 breast and 16th in the 100 back.
Other swimmers who competed for the Swordfish included Anna Busalacchi (age 10), Emma Schmidt (11), Henry Lutz (11), Madeleine Jamieson (12), Emily Koranda (12) and Brandon Toye (13).
