Milwaukee Washington 78, Wauwatosa West 67
Milwaukee Washington, a week removed from losing two of its top three scorers, looked just as intimidating as ever Saturday night in knocking off Wauwatosa West, 78-67, in a Division 1 regional final game at Washington.
Since the Wauwatosa West coach Mike Landisch was diagnosed with kidney cancer and forced to take a leave of absence from the team last month, West's players have dedicated themselves to making sure they continue to play to the game the way Landisch would want them.
New Berlin Eisenhower 50, Wauwatosa West 47
Mitch Sperka, a 6-foot-3 senior, had a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds, and his fourth-quarter heroics helped Eisenhower rally for a 50-47 win over visiting Wauwatosa West and remain unbeaten.
Wauwatosa West 62, Whitnall 57
The Wauwatosa West boys basketball team played spoiler to Whitnall senior guard Will Pelkofer. Pelkofer reached the 1,000-point plateau, becoming one of few Whitnall players to do so. The game, however, belonged to Tosa West for the first three quarters, and the Trojans survived a late rally to win.
Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout
Tosa East scored a 57-56 victory over Milwaukee Washington, the team ranked third in the area by the Journal Sentinel, on the second and final day of the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout at the Al McGuire Center, sealing the victory with Dan Sayles' three-pointer from the wing at the buzzer. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for one of the area's proudest programs.
New Berlin Eisenhower 51, Wauwatosa West 38
New Berlin Eisenhower, the defending Woodland Conference champs, took Wauwatosa West's best shot Tuesday night as the visiting Trojans raced to a 15-4 lead. But the Lions used their superior size and skill to eventually pull away and notch a 51-38 victory.
Boys volleyball
With only nine boys volleyball teams in the field, the Red Raider Invite wasn't big on quantity. But the fact that four of the teams were ranked in the top 10 of the state coaches poll showed that the tournament at Wauwatosa East on Saturday certainly didn't lack quality.
Division 1: Milwaukee Washington 60, Wauwatosa East 57
The last two years, the Al McGuire Center has been a house of horrors for Milwaukee Washington. Twice the Purgolders reached the WIAA Division 1 sectional as the No. 1-seeded team, and twice Washington failed to advance. Not this time.
