Hurricanes fifth at conference relays

Dec. 12, 2011 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa Hurricanes finished fifth in the Woodland Conference Relays on Dec. 7 at Cudahy High School.

The Hurricanes, which also finished fifth last year, had a first-place finisher, two fourth-place finishers and three fifth-place performers.

The winning 100-yard freestyle relay (46.20) where Caleb Hernday, Eddie Galindo, Jack Lutz and Max Brovarney finished the evening with a solid win.

Fourth-place finishers were Lutz, Peter Hovel, Michael Silverling and Hernday in the 400 individual medley (4:18.01) and Galindo, Hernday, Hovel and Brovarney in the 400 medley (4:15.72).

The three fifth-place finishers were the diving relay of Tony Benz, Nathan Restyanszki and TJ Baker (200.15); the 100 relay of John Kay, Alex Swenson, Stuart VanderVelde and Jonah Robison (58.32); and the 300 butterfly of VanderVelde, Lutz, Silverling and Hovel (3:08.06).

Greenfield/Greendale won the event with 268 points, finishing ahead of New Berlin (258), Shorewood (248), Whitnall (228) and Tosa (164). Rounding out the standings were Brown Deer/University School (140), South Milwaukee (134), Cudahy (116) and St. Thomas More/St. Francis (96).

"Although we lost a bunch of strong swimmers this year, this meet proved to our boys that sometimes depth is just as good," Tosa coach Heidi Goetsch said. "Our final relay of the night was the winning 100 freestyle relay where we finished the evening with a solid win, placing only 0.58 ahead of Whitnall.

"The boys had a lot of fun in this non-traditional meet setting and they are excited to get to our next duel meet. Overall, I am very proud of the boys tonight and I know they are proud of themselves."
