Girls basketball: Whitefish Bay uses big third quarter to nip Trojans

Jan. 25, 2012 | 0 comments

After getting nine days off, the Wauwatosa West girls jumped back into action Tuesday at home with a 48-41 loss to Whitefish Bay in a nonconference game.

The Blue Dukes are now 12-1 overall, in second place (6-1) in the North Shore Conference behind Nicolet (7-0, 13-0).

The loss dropped the Trojans to 5-7, but they are 5-5 in the Woodland Conference Black Division, one-half game out of third behind Whitnall (5-4, 8-5).

The Trojans trailed only 12-11 after one quarter and 24-20 at intermission, but then ran into some problems in the third period that cost them the game.

The talented Blue Dukes went on a 20-8 run in the third quarter and rolled into the fourth with a 44-29 advantage.

The Tosa West defense came up big time, holding Whitefish Bay to four points, while the offense scored 12, but it was too little too late.

Junior guard Elisabeth Johnston led the way with a game-high 17 points, while 6-foot-2-inch sophomore forward Maya Jones added 13 and Lindsey Agnew had 10.

Junior post Jessica Pike led the Trojans with 14 points, including two 3-pointers, and senior guard Jenna Engel added 10.

Junior Latasha Harmon had six, senior guard Jenna Lehmann and sophomore guard Ashley Lindstrom each had four, and Elise Ditscheit scored three.

The Trojans are struggling, having lost four of their last five games. They have a two-game losing streak, having last beaten St. Thomas More, 55-32, on Jan. 10.

Tosa West travels to powerful New Berlin Eisenhower (10-0, 12-0) for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday and then hosts Greendale (4-6, 4-9) on Tuesday.
