The Wauwatosa East girls rolled over Brookfield East, 48-30, on Friday at home to improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Greater Metro Conference coming into this week.
The Red Raiders led, 28-15, at intermission in the win over the Lady Spartans, as Katie Salmon scored four of their 10 first-period points as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Then in the 18-point second-quarter, Salmon had six points while Lydia Taylor and Cherise Carter each scored five points.
"Katie Salmon gave them some match-up difficulty due to her size, and she took advantage," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said. "Lydia Taylor inside had five and a nice spark off the bench was provided by Cherise Carter who had five points in what we felt was a decisive second quarter."
Hamill felt the Red Raiders had a size and depth advantage and they needed to use that against the Lady Spartans.
"We felt we were going to have a size and bench advantage and our goal was to take as much advantage of those two things as possible," he said. "This is part of why we were able to pull ahead in the second quarter."
Emily Jensen then came out and scored all six of her points in the third period as the Red Raiders expanded their lead to 40-23 after three periods.
"We came out strong in the third quarter and we were able to get everyone some effective minutes," Hamill said. "Overall it was a good win."
The win was the second of the week, as the Red Raiders beat Milwaukee Washington, 44-42, on Dec. 6 to open the week.
"Overall a pretty good week for Tosa East girls basketball," Hamill said. "We came out of the Mil Washington game with a W but a little battered and bruised. What was good was that even though they played a faster pace and were more physical, we were able to rise to the occasion and find a way to win.
"To our players, (I give) credit, they didn't quit and played hard throughout."
