GIRLS BASKETBALL Chargers beat Red Raiders

Feb. 7, 2012 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa East girls were outscored, 116-46, in losses last week to two of the three leaders of the Greater Metro Conference.

Menomonee Falls (8-2, 15-3) defeated the Raiders, 68-29, on Jan. 31 and then Sussex Hamilton (8-2, 12-2) rolled over them, 48-17, on Friday. Both games were at home.

The two defeats added up to five losses out of the last six games, as Tosa East dropped to 3-7, sixth place in the conference, and 4-11 overall.

"The scores look bad, but I think we concluded the week in a positive way," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said. "We had some adversity but we kept our focus, came together and for the most part played defense well enough to win the game.

"The first half was a legit, hard-fought close game - holding Sussex to 17 first-half points was not because they were playing poorly - we were playing defense well."

The problem was the Red Raiders scored only eight first-half points and nine in the second half.

"We simply had a tough time generating any offense against the physical, in-your-face kind of defense played by Sussex," Hamill said. "In the second half, Sussex really turned up the pressure and we didn't get many opportunities."

Tosa East only had 21 shots for the game and converted five, 24 percent from the field.

"It was a testament to the aggressiveness of Sussex," Hamill said.

The Chargers' 6-foot sophomore forward Mackenzie Latt outscored the entire Tosa East team with 25 points. Emily Jensen (six points) and Katie Salmon (four) were the only Tosa players with four or more points.
