East teams lose to Bulldogs

Jan. 25, 2012 | 0 comments

Wauwatosa East - the team played without star guard Anthony (AC) Carroll - couldn't stop 6-foot-8-inch senior Tonnie Collier and dropped a 60-56 decision Tuesday at West Allis Central.

The loss dropped the Red Raiders (6-2) two games behind Brookfield Central (8-0) and a share of second with the Bulldogs (6-2) in the Greater Metro Conference race.

The talented Collier was unstoppable all night, as he finished with a game-high 25 points on 10 field goals and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. Senior forward Najeal McMillian came off the bench to score 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Junior guard Marquise Carter tossed in 16 points to lead the Red Raiders while Diamonte Mckinley added eight points and Bryce Kratzer added seven.

Trailing 33-19 at intermission thanks to a terrible second quarter (19-7), Tosa East received some solid advice from coach Tim Arndorfer.

"I told them to chip away at the lead," he said. "We weren't going to get it back in one basket. We still had too many mistakes when we needed baskets. Little mistakes. And until we figure that out it's going to be a long stretch."

A defensive nod

When told that Collier was a tough guy to stop, Arndorfer gave the Bulldogs their due.

"They all are," he said. "They have a balanced attack of inside and out, so you try and take the inside away, they can hurt you outside. But their big guys really hurt us.

Arndorfer was not happy with his backcourts.

"We hurt ourselves too," he said. "Our guard play was not very good, a least in the first half. Second half it was much improved. We have to put a full game together. We haven't done that in I don't know how many now."

Mich Dillon played a solid game in limited minutes for the Red Raiders, scoring two key baskets and getting some big rebounds in the Red Raiders' late rally.

"We might need him with Zak (Sylvester) out (knee surgery). His size will help. We're still looking for a guy who will consistently rebound. Maybe he's it."

Trailing 53-41 with 4:06 left in the game after a three-point play by freshman Brandon Key, the Red Raiders went on a 15-7 run to cut the lead to 58-56 with 30.9 seconds.

Nate Moore had six points, Dillon had a rebound basket, Ben Carpenter a free throw, Carter two baskets and Mckinley a rebound basket.

But Key sank two free throws after a timeout and East missed three shots in the final 30 seconds.

Carter sparked the Red Raiders to an 18-11 third quarter by scoring eight points, while Vince Cupertino added five, as they cut the lead to 44-37 after three quarters. McMillian had six points for Central in the quarter.

Moore had six points, Dillon four and Carter four in the final period, while Collier had six points and Key five down the stretch.

Collier had 17 points at intermission.

"There's a long way to go," Arndorfer said. "We have a lot of work to do to get back where we were."

Bulldogs girls topple East

West Allis Central used big first (20-8) and fourth (23-11) quarters to put away the Red Raiders girls on Tuesday at Tosa East and rolled to a 68-50 victory.

The loss dropped Tosa East to 2-5 (3-9) in the Greater Metro Conference while the Bulldogs improved to 3-4 (4-10) and moved past the Red Raiders into fifth place.

Tosa East trailed 35-25 at half and 45-39 going into the final period.

Emily Jensen had 15 points, while Katie Salmon (8-of-10 for free throws) and Maddie Packard had eight each. Central's Mehryn Kraker had 25 points and Claire Hankins added 21.
