A poor third quarter did in the Wauwatosa East girls basketball team on Dec. 21 as they dropped a 40-37 non-conference game at St. Francis.
The Red Raiders took a 25-21 lead into intermission, as they had a slight advantage in high-scoring first (14-13) and second (11-8) quarters.
But then the Mariners (2-6) came out in the third quarter and went on an 11-5 run to lead 32-30 going into the fourth period. The Red Raiders then battled hard, but fell short as St. Francis had a slight 8-7 advantage.
Katie Salmon led the way with 12 points, followed by Alayah Walls with nine and Emily Jensen with six. Amanda Scherbarth had a big game for the Mariners with 18 points while Shaylyn Fuersteneau had Sarah Caughell added eight points apiece.
The Red Raiders (2-5) will have a tough nut to crack when they play a non-conference game at Whitefish Bay (7-0) on Thursday.
They then have off until getting back into Greater Metro Conference play Jan. 6 against West Allis Hale at home.
The game with the Huskies, who are 1-2 in conference play and 1-5 overall, is a big game for the Red Raiders, who are 1-2 in league play.
The next part of their schedule is tougher, with games against Brookfield Central, Divine Savior Holy Angels and West Allis Central.
