The Tosa Hurricanes beat Brown Deer/University School on Jan. 11 at Wauwatosa, 105-76, to start the week, then finished fifth in the 10-team Sheboygan South Redwing Invitational on Saturday.
Tosa won nine of the 12 events and coasted to the victory against Brown Deer/University School.
The 200 medley relay of Eddie Galindo, Michael Siverling, Jack Lutz and Max Brovarney came from behind to win the opening race in 1 minute, 54.77 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay of Galindo, Brovarney, Peter Hovel and Caleb Hernday (1:40.67) and the 400 free relay of Lutz, Hovel, Siverling and Hernday (3:44.67) also won their races.
"We started the meet with a bang by touching out BDUS by .09 in the 200 medley relay," Tosa coach Heidi Goetsch said. "The boys have really been working on their turns and finishes and we are seeing the results. It's really nice to see."
Other standout performances were turned in by Tony Benz, who won the diving with 184.20 points and Lutz won the 200 individual medley (2:18.44) and the 100 butterfly (personal record 1:02.35).
Hernday dropped nine seconds and won the 500 free (PR-5:31.45).
Galindo won the 100 backstroke (PR-1:00.58) and Brovarney won the 50 free (25.05).
The boys finished fifth Saturday 151.5 points in the Redwing Invitational behind Sheboygan South (426.5), Marshfield (291.5), Sheboygan North (272.5) and Racine Park (259).
"I was pleasantly surprised on how well they did," Goetsch said.
Hovel took third in the 200 freestyle (2:02.21), Siverling dropped four-plus seconds off his best time in the 500 free to finish third. Lutz took fourth in the 200 IM (2:14.94) and fourth in the 100 fly (1:01.49).
The 200 free relay of Brovarney, Lutz, Hovel and Hernday took fourth (1:37.71) as did the 400 free relay of Lutz, Siverling, Hovel and Hernday (3:44.51).
Hernday was fifth in the 200 IM (2:16.49) and backstroke (1:02.30), while Benz was fifth in the 1-meter diving competition (281.10).
This invite was the first of a string of invites the Hurricanes will have before sectionals.
"It was a long meet, but the boys proved they can really race and have fun while doing it," Goetsch said. "Most of our swimmers had best or near season-best times in the meet."
