Red Raiders girls take on Oak Creek in regional

East faces uphill battle against Knights

March 3, 2010 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa East girls basketball team, coming off an 0-2 week, will face Brookfield Central in their Greater Metro Conference final at 7:30 p.m. today.

The Red Raiders (2-11, 4-17) are the 12th seed in the Whitefish Bay Sectional and they will open the postseason at Oak Creek (14-7) of the Southeast Conference at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The winner of that game meets the winner of the fourth-seeded Milwaukee King (16-5)/Milwaukee Ronald Reagan/Lifelong Learning (6-12).

Tosa East dropped a 63-40 decision to Whitefish Bay (12-9) on Feb. 23 in a non-conference game to open the week. They trailed 38-23 at intermission and 53-33 after three quarters.

Cara Walls had 13 points and Talisha Simpson added 12 to lead the way, as only five Red Raiders scored.

"We made some adjustments during the week, which in part may have resulted in one of the more inspired efforts of the season on Friday," Tosa East coach Rob Hamill said, following a 58-34 loss at Sussex Hamilton (12-9). "We did just about everything right to win the game - our defense, rebounding, intensity and focus were all very good against a good Sussex Hamilton team."

But the one thing Tosa East didn't do was put the ball in the hoop, hitting only seven 52 shots from two-point range, a miserable 14 percent shooting rate.

"We ran our offenses, got good shots and good put-back opportunities," Hamill said. "But at least half of those misses were easy shots any varsity player should make."

Hamill was not happy with the results, but he credited his players' effort.

"To our team's credit, they showed up and played with pride and heart," he said. "Looking at the box score, it looks like it fits right in with our pattern this season - one bad quarter (24-10 in third period).

"What wasn't in the box score was the pride, intensity, and focus. We make the easy shots and free throws; we win and feel a lot better."

Walls led Tosa East with 13 points.
