Wrestling: Five grapplers off to sectional

Feb. 15, 2010 | 0 comments

The Wauwatosa East/West co-op wrestling team is sending five wrestlers to Saturday's WIAA Sectional at Oconomowoc, which begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Red Raiders/Trojans finished fifth (116 points) at the eight-team Waukesha South Regional; Muskego won the event (194.5).

Wauwatosa had one second-, two third- and two fourth-place finishes.

Demetrius Mensah led the way, taking second at 125 pounds and scoring 20 team points.

He pinned his New Berlin West/Eisenhower opponent (1:08) to open the day, then won by a major decision (10-0) over Waukesha North. He lost the first-place match to champion Justin Wolfenden of Brookfield East (7-0) but won the second-place match by major decision (16-4) over Devon Haase (Waukesha South).

"Demetrius had an up-and-down day," Tosa coach Kent Morin said. "He had three really good matches but fell short in his finals match. I just felt like he never got his offense started in the finals against Wolfenden from Brookfield East. The good news is, hopefully we get another shot at him next Saturday at sectionals."

Cory Jay scored 14 team points and took third at 152 for Tosa. He won by pin (5:38) over Muskego, but lost in the semifinals to Waukesha West by decision (6-4). He then won the third-place match in overtime (8-6) against Waukesha South, but lost the second-place match by rule to Waukesha West.

Dylan Kissinger at 160 had the other third-place finish, scoring 14 team points. He opened with a pin (3:53) over Muskego, but lost a major decision (12-3) to Waukesha West. Then in the third-place match he won by decision (5-4) over Waukesha South. He lost by rule to Waukesha West in the second-place match.

Patrick Campbell at 119 and Kevin Kanngieser at 285 finished fourth and scored 11 team points each.

Campbell pinned (2:54) his Muskego opponent, lost by a pin to Waukesha West, lost by a decision (7-1) to Waukesha North and won the fourth-place match by rule over Muskego.

Kanngieser lost by decision (4-1) to Muskego, but then won by pin (1:27) over Waukesha South in the consolation semifinals and won by pin (1:09) over Waukesha North in the fifth-place match. He then won by decision (5-3) over New Berlin West/Eisenhower to finish fourth.

"We lost some heartbreaking matches in the fourth-place wrestlebacks, where if you win, you qualify for sectionals," Morin said.
