Hurricanes shine at Woodland meet

The Wauwatosa Hurricanes set two team records and had three individuals (four events) and one relay team earn all-conference honors at Greenfield on Saturday.

"We had some great performances against some very tough competition," Hurricanes coach Russ Weigel said. Wauwatosa finished fifth out of eight teams with 302 points. Shorewood won the event with 474 points.

Shawn Roll took second in the 1-meter diving with a school record 331.60 score, and Lance Mielke finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a school time of 51.20 seconds. He also finished third in the 100 backstroke (55.82).

All-conference performances came from Roll, Jake Shackelford, Will Utech and the 200 medley relay team.

Shackelford was second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.70) and second in the 500 free (5:07.20), and Utech finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.42) and third in the 50 free (23.08).

The 200 medley relay of Mielke, Utech, Shackelford and Ethan Heinrich finished second (1:43.11) rounding out the all-conference performances.

The Hurricanes had six other top-10 performances.

The 200 free relay of Utech, Peter Hovel, Adam Lefevre and Heinrich took fourth (1:36.29), as did the 400 free relay of Shackelford, Hovel, Caleb Hernday and Mielke (3:34.75).

Heinrich took eighth in the 200 free (1:58.70) and ninth in the 100 free (52.92). Hernday was ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:19.47), and Hovel was ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.84).

The Hurricanes will now take part in the sectionals Saturday.
